Distinguished recognition of excellence

Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Miller School and CEO of University of Miami Health System, was named Business Leader of the Year in the hospital category by Business Leader Media. He was honored during the Second Annual Business Leader of the Year Awards ceremony in downtown Miami in June. Dean Goldschmidt was selected from among three finalists in the category.

W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., chief medical officer of Sylvester, was honored with the AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Health Care Heroes Awards in Miami last spring. The award is given annually to a leader who has made a significant contribution to the health and well-being of the South Florida community.
Norma Sue Kenyon, Ph.D., Martin Kleiman Professor of Surgery, microbiology and immunology, and biomedical engineering, was honored in the biomedical category and Eckhard Podack, M.D., Ph.D., Sylvester Distinguished Professor of Medicine and chairman of microbiology and immunology, was a finalist in the health care professional category.

Omaida Velazquez, M.D., professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, is currently a fellow in the 2010-11 class of the prestigious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. ELAM is the only national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for leadership roles at academic health centers.

Andreas G. Tzakis, M.D., Ph.D., professor of surgery and director of the Liver/GI Transplant Program, received a Doctor of Science honoris causa from The American College of Greece during commencement in June in Athens. Each year the institution selects honorary degree recipients who have contributed significantly to their field of expertise.
